Drums and cello – that clashes. One might think: And yet both instruments can carry you off into dreams. Across epochs and styles, composers and works, the musicians follow paths that all end in dreams. Pablo Casals and Eugène Ysaye pursue the dream of peace and see music as the space (dream) withdrawn from the world that enables boundless encounters. Oriol Cruixent, Per Anderson and Avner Dorman also invite us into a dream world that realizes the compositionally, sonically and musically impossible. And then Alberto Ginastera: in an unprecedented combination of South American folklore and contemporary compositional techniques, his music moves somewhere between ecstasy and delirium, between reality and delusion.

Musical program

  • Pablo Casals (1876–1973): Song of the birds (arr. for cello and marimbaphone)
  • Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983): Sonata op. 49 (arr. for cello and marimbaphone)
  • Oriol Cruixent (*1976): Alpha Mysterium (world premiere)
  • Per Anderson: Tinplay
  • Avner Dorman (*1975): Udacrep Akubrad
  • Oriol Cruixent (*1976): Portal 137 (world premiere)
  • Eugène Ysaye (1858–1931): Sonata for cello solo in c minor, op. 28

Fanny Mendelssohn Artists

From the very beginning, the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis has promoted joint performance opportunities for the award winners, where they can also pursue their soloistic ambitions. One example is the annual “Festival of the Award Winners” at the Elbphilharmonie.

The award winners want to further expand the concept of joint performances in a changing line-up and have joined forces with selected FMFP finalists under the name “Fanny Mendelssohn Artists”. Together they form a new ensemble of top-class classical soloists, which will delight audiences with creative programs and flexible instrumentations at festivals and concerts at home and abroad.

Musik X Art

INS OFFENE..! presents visual art as an integral part of the concert events within the framework of the festival, such as the picture series “Music in Picture” by the Italian artist Flavio de Marco, paintings by the Ukrainian painter Kate Nikolya or the video installation “Artificial Intelligence Mental Disorder” by the Uzbek-Azerbaijani artist duo Denis Davydov and Farhad Farzali.
